Northern Route - Led by Lynn and Mary , the northern route destination is the famous LL Bean flag ship store in Freeport, ME. The route to get there will stop in at three lighthouses plus a beach. The ride is 86 miles long on secondary roads with max speeds of 50 mph.

Lighthouses include:

  • Two Lights State Park area - we will not enter the park, but this is a beautiful "return trip" if you have time. Only one of the twin lighthouses, built in 1828, is still active. The easternmost is active and the other is now a private home. Edward Hopper made one of the lighthouses the subject of his 1929 painting, The Lighthouse at Two Lights.
  • Portland Head Light This light house is the oldest in Maine, having been completed in 1791, with construction beginning in 1787 at the direction of George Washington. It sits at the entrance to the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor. It is reported to be the most photographed lighthouse in America.
  • Bug Light was constructed in 1875 and consists of curved cast-iron plates whose seams are disguised by decorative Corinthian columns. The architect was Thomas Walter, designer of the US Capitol east and west wings and its current dome, and was inspired by the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, Greece.
  • East End Beach is the only public beach in Portland proper and offers breathtaking views of Casco Bay.

Northern "L.L. Bean" Ride

Southern Route - Darrell and Kellie will take you to Mount Agamenticus , and then to visit the Nubble Light. This ride is approximately 100 miles and estimated time with stops is 6 hrs. Mount Agamenticus is 692 ft high and has the highest elevation of any hill within its distance from the ocean from Portland, ME to Brownsville, TX. It was formerly a ski area, and the remnants of lifts can still be seen as the ski area operated from 1966 to 1974.

Cape Neddick Light is commonly known as Nubble Light. The light house was put into service in 1879 and is still in use today. Nubble Light is a classic example of a lighthouse and the image of the lighthouse is included on the Voyager Golden Record carried by the Voyager spacecraft. Unusually, the stanchions of the walkway railing around the lantern room are decorated with 4 inch brass replicas of the lighthouse itself.
